93. Capital Punishment (1925)

I watched Capital Punishment because of Elliott Dexter, but turns out his performance was the least interesting in this one.

I found two other actors who made up for that, though.

The story itself was quite similar to that of The Whispering Chorus (1918), The Goose Woman (1925), and Man, Woman and Sin (1927).

This pretty little creature is Eddie Phillips (1899-1965), who played a wrongly convicted boy in a very tiny role.

If you ask me, I think he could well have been suitable for the main role.

But I suppose he wasn't a big enough a star yet.

He was really good in the role but I didn't get a good screen shot of him.

The following day, in another place.

Gordon Harrington is spending time with two of his friends.

This is the other one;Harry Phillips, played by Robert Ellis (1892-1974)

the other one is this girl Mona Caldwell, played by Margaret Livingston (1900-1984).

Gordon is so enraged that he proposes a social experiment

Dude is initially not that into it but then agrees

So Gordon agrees to play dead and to "disappear" while the other two are to set up his "murder.

They take his personal belongings to be used as props.

Enter the two other stars of the film.

An ordinary young couple :

Delia Tate (that feisty Clara Bow, 20 years old at the time)

and

Dan O'Connor (George Hackathorne, who reminded me of Paul Reubens a lot)

this is Officer Dugan (Wade Boteler) who will play a part in the events later on

he gets her a cheaper ring in the meantime

as they are about to leave they see that Gordon guy

Dan imagines what a life of riches would be like.:

It's quite moving, as he imagines himself, his girlfriend and his mother enjoying a fancy dinner together in a posh living room.

Despite their newly acquired status, they would all be as they are now, a bit rough around the edges.

having signed the contract, Dan hides it into a drawer

Next day.

The news.

over at the pawn shop, Dan is playing his part, aiming to get caught

Delia arrives on the scene by chance and is shocked to see her boyfriend getting arrested

at home, the women are doing housework and waiting for Dan's return

a delivery boy drops by and the thing he brings -

not sure what it is, food perhaps... it was too dark to see clearly

- is wrapped in a newish newspaper,

with guess who on the front page:

Delia consoles Dan's mother before visiting him in jail

Mona has gone to see Harry who's in hiding, but the isolation has made him randy and bitter.

He is overly assertive.

luckily Gordon arrives on the scene and pulls him away from the lady

the guys end up fighting and then:

Mona brings Gordon some kind of a metal rod, which he uses to smash the randy man's head in

ah, so convenient to lay the blame on someone else, yea?

One of my favorite inter-title cards ever.

Fantabulous eyes!

Gordon's got some nerve to bring false hope

But he fails to deliver the goods

the prison personnel give him some reading

he begs for a phone call

the contract had gone missing

Dan gets a short leave

to bid his final goodbye

says the boy with the handcuffs on

she's gone

meanwhile the meanies are planning their escape

Officer Dugan to the rescue!

92. Bud's Recruit (1918)

So... I fell for Robert Gordon.

Here's another one of his appearances.

It's the time of war.

Bud is one of two brothers, the main characters of this film.

He lives and breathes for the thought of war and the need to take action.

While being too young to enlist, he has built up a reserve army from his peers

this kid was too short to be accepted

but was then given the task of drumming out of pity

turns out the marching and drumming was too much, so the kid stopped to rest

hmmm, hmm

Now we're talking!

Mrs. Gilbert looks proudly on

She and Reggie are a part of the pacifist association in their city

Bud comes home for supper

Reggie talks about not getting drafted

Bud shouts at him for being a coward or something, interrupting the call

Bud leaves the table without having eaten

he feels pity for the boy

There is no mention of the boys' father in the film and that leaves the story open for speculation.
Did their father die in the war and thus inflict traumas on everybody?

Is that why Bud wants to be like him, whereas Reggie and the mother are terrified of the whole thing?

Bud lies down for some daydreams

he thinks up a scene where a man carries the American flag and once he gets shot down, another man will take his place and carry the flag on his behalf

the boyfriend informs her, making her really proud and happy

enter Reggie and Edith

Reggie is relieved about not being in the same position as the other guy

the guys get into an argument

back home, Bud gets some supper after all

Reggie arrives, he's a bit moody

he takes down the Army poster from their door

Bud gets mad and draws a chalk line to separate their room in half

meanwhile the kids' army protests outside

they come out to see what's going on

Edith changes sides, wanting to carry a flag for the boys

Nightfall

Bud reads the grim news and feels disgusted and frustrated

he looks into the mirror and catches the reflection of his sleeping brother...

and something specific about his features

the mustache!

he makes up a fake one for himself to see if it might fool people

the following morning he's up early to enlist

back at home Reggie is confused about the whereabouts of his glasses, but he does have a spare pair

Reg is confused after he meets some townspeople who congratulate him

Edith is proudly showing the paper to Mrs. Gilbert

...even Edith's sister sneaks up to give him a congratulatory kiss

The mother holds onto a portrait, probably Reggie's.

Could also be the father's picture, though

Reginald gets to see the news for himself

he leaves the women and retreats into his room

despite the confusion, he gets a bit show off-y

he boasts to Bud, and the two shake hands

still contemplating the news, he sits down to read the paper

what do his pretty eyes see?

uh oh... busted!!

a fight ensues

poor boy

he has a look around the station and gets bombarded by posters

Bud is getting ready, dressing up as his brother

the name is called up at the recruitment office

both Gilbert boys are there, so Bud has to go back home while Reggie joins the ranks

Bud brings out the whole family to see the moment when Reggie leaves for war

91. Tom Sawyer (1917)

More Jack Pickford !

Playing the part of Aunt Polly; Edythe Chapman (54), who did a whole lot of over acting in this film, but I'm not sure if it was intentional or not.

And Jackie boy on the right, he was 21 but looked kind of boyish so he fit the role.

I have not read the book so I don't know the story, but for some reason Tom really loathes this guy

I guess I might be a bit odd in the sense that I never got the point in boys getting into physical fights. I spent most of my early school days breaking up fights between my hothead brother and his bullies.

honestly, it looked like a rope stuck onto a granny wig

Tom needs to get groomed for Church

but since he does such a lousy job, he needs help from his sister

that handsome devil Huck happens to be passing by Tom's house

He stops by to have a little chat... and exposes his nipple in the business.

And YES I did rewind this scene a number of times while watching.

Now outside the church, Sawyer is fixing up a Bible Prize contest but I'm not sure exactly what is going on. Should read the book, I know.

The new girl Becky's family gets invited to the front of the church

Monday. On his way to school, Tom stops to talk with Huck for a bit

WHAT AN OUTRAGE

that'll suit him just fine cos he gets to sit with Becky

okay, can I do that with Huck?

Uh oh, Tom - TMI !

he tries to woo her over again by giving her :

Oh.

but Becky's not that easy, she throws it onto the floor

Tom gets mad and storms off

while auntie visits the kitchen, the boys get into a scuffle which results in a broken sugar bowl

Tom goes over to Becky's place, fantasizing about her/her degree of devotion. He sits on her lawn like a creepster, while the girl is alseep. He plays dead.

just then Becky's maid throws some water out of the window, hitting Tom boy

he finds a worthy parter in crime from that Joe Harper guy

while walking past a field they see a barrel, from which smoke is arising

inside, they find my pin-up boy

the three pirates head off to a desert island, in secret

but as Huck steps away from the raft, it drifts away

back at home people have woken up and noticed that the boys are missing

meanwhile the lords do a bit of swimming

fishermen figure out that the drifting raft can only mean one thing - the boys have drowned

after dinner Huck blows a bit of smoke towards the other boys, making them curious about the pipe

not as much fun as it seemed

there goes Joe Harper, soon to be followed by Tom

Huck is initially amused

but then decides to go check up on his fellow pirates

as the sun sets, Tom gets emotional and starts to think about the folks back home

he pens two messages - one to be delivered to his aunt

and the other to his friends

Sleeping Beauty, Huck

Sawyer takes off

Tom gets home and hides away, eavesdropping on his relatives

He waits until people go to sleep and then thinks things over. He decides not to leave the message after all

he returns to the island to tell the others about their upcoming "funeral"

they come up with a surprise plan

happy reunion time!

I would gladly trade places with her

HAHA

while others rejoice, my boy Huck wipes away all of those kisses

and takes off on his own

ps.

as an added extra... it says on IMDB that Jack's wife Olive Thomas had a bit part in the film, as a member of the chorus. She should be one of these, then:

Hello there!

I've been away for quite some time. I had a minor argument with my housemate, the whole thing escalated to the point where he cut off my internet connection. I tried setting up a mobile connection but that sucked in a big way so it was no good.

But now things are back to "normal" again, the internet is up and running and I can start sharing things with you again.

I'll start off with something that I received in the mail recently. I fetched it from the post office and opened it with trembling hands. What I was holding was the autobiography of Miss Lillian Gish, signed by the saintly lady herself:

This book means the world to me, it's like magic, like something from an Egyptian tomb... I mean... SHE laid her little hand down on this page and wrote on it. It blows my mind.

Anyway, I wanted to share some of the amazing photographs from it, so here we go:

90. The Cardboard Lover (1928)

I set out to find this film quite a while ago and when I finally found it I was extatic. And no, not just because Nils Asther is in it, but because it's the only (to my knowledge, anyway) surviving film in which Pepi Lederer appeared. She was a tragic girl who spent far too little time on this earth before her untimely demise at the age of 25.

And now a word of warning:

This post might have the most screenshots that I've posted so far.

I'll put the blame on Nils. Cos... well, you know. Because he was such a delight to look at.

Marion Davies (31) as Sally, a student on a holiday. She pulled this specific expression about a million times during the movie, it was a bit irksome but in the end I liked her character a lot. Oh, and Marion also served as the executive producer on this movie, along with her lover, the publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst.

If they'd made this film in Germany,

Ossi Oswalda would have been just the person to play Sally.

Pepi Leder as Sally's gutsy friend.

Marion Davies was Pepi's aunt in real life.

the girls are busy checking in at the hotel when suddenly a pompous guy walks over

the girl gets a certain gleam in her eyes and we'll learn she's a real autograph hound

and write he does, only..

..it's something so rude that the girl tears the page out and hands it back to the creep

next up there's a whole lot of commotion when a flashy couple steps into the foyer

aka Nils Asther (31) with Jetta Goudal (37), who played the part of a ruthless vamp, Simone

And sadly this is the last that we'll see of Pepi, this is her last scene in the movie. She looks at the glamorous couple along with Sally and the other girls. I wish she'd had more screen time.

having made this vow, Sally begins to pursue Andre, but before she gets to him, she sees the vamp exchanging some inappropriate glances with the creep:

meanwhile, at Andre's suite

Tenen Holtz (51) as Andre's magnificent manservant Albine

and dammit, Andre should listen to Albine

because his not so lovely vampy gal is indeed two timing him with the creep,

who's singing to her when the phone rings

that explanation doesn't go down very well when mr creep suddenly has a coughing fit

Andre gets suspicious but doesn't say anything

he makes a surprise visit into Simone's suite

uh oh, he catches a glimpse of Creepo from the mirror

He's been trying to sneak out of the room unnoticed

Look, look!
Andre gets fierce:

Right on, Andre!

meanwhile Sally's been stalking the suite and waiting for the guy to come out

but alas, the fountain pen isn't working and since the guy is in turmoil, he leaves the girl without an autograph and heads to the casino

but she's determined and "borrows" a car, follows him

Wanting to level with the guy, she tries her luck with the game but not knowing the rules, ends up owing him a deal of money

but she's not that well off so they go over to a private room to discuss the money matter

he spots his vampy lady friend arriving to the casino too

so that's the plan. she becomes his "cardboard lover", so that he can have his revenge on the vamp

but the vamp won't be fooled that easily.

she asks to see Andre in private, by the moonlight.
It doesn't take her long to assure him their love's still going on strong

Sally bribes a bellhop to change clothes with her

cheeky little Sally

the following day Sally goes to check up on Andre again

she sees the huge framed portrait of Simone on a desk and alters it a bit:

Meanwhile Andre has been on the phone to Simone who wants to have a reconciliation. Sally's determined not to let it happen, so she tags along and makes sure Silmone understands Andre's no longer available. All this happens in a nicely shot scene where only the actors feet are shown. I tried to make a gif animation of it but it kept crashing my computer so you'll just have to imagine it for yourselves or watch the film. It's worth it.

But moving on; Andre is starting to regret his deal with Sally and he tries to get rid of her but the girl's determined to keep her part of the deal.

you don't fool Sal

she gets mad at Andre for trying to trick her into believing he's sick, so she takes revenge on him and overdoes the nurse part

she tosses a hot water bottle under the covers

then she wants to stick this strange paper-like thing onto his chest,
I'm not sure what it is but apparently it's supposed to help a sick person.
Any ideas?

look at him being a grumpy little lord

Sally says she'd better call a doctor just in case and leaves the room

Andre needs help removing the medical sticky thing on his chest
and this causes for my favorite scene to happen:

His bizarre expressions actually kind of turn me on.
I might need to have my head checked.

The fake sickness doesn't convince Sally and she decides to stick around to make sure that the guy won't go running back to the shady lady

priceless stuff!

Andre is in no mood for stories and wants to go out

when he tries to help her with the dress they end up tickling each other
and it helps them bond a little

so they must try it once more

oh, sneaky

the phone rings and interrupts them

she's got him roped in within seconds, once again

Andre tells Sally that she doesn't mean as much to him as Simone does

he's walks Sally out and gets ready to meet the vampire lady again

there's some commotion coming from the bedroom and they turn to watch

it's Sally, she climbed back in through a window and changed into a dressing gown

the guy has to separate the ladies

Simone leaves the house, Andre follows and Sally tries to stop him

soooo... she socks him on the jaw
but that makes him all mad and he gives her a push

she falls down and hits her head on the furniture

Andre panics and rushes over to her

I won't spoil the ending for you.

But I've got a little bonus:

neither one of these scenes appeared in the film, at least not in the version that I saw

I wonder if they were cut out later on or lost or what?

89. A Girl In Every Port (1928)

Oh boy, oh boy.

I watched this film because according to the credits my dearest Gladys Brockwell was in the movie but in the end this turned out to be like Himmelskibet: Nils Asther was supposedly in it, yet I DID NOT SPOT HIM.

This makes me feel like a lousy fan, I mean... I thought I'd never fail to spot my dearest star onscreen but apparently I do. Please accept my apologies, Saint Brockwell. I tried.

Aside from supposedly featuring Gladys B., I was also drawn into this one by the fact that Louise Brooks is in it. I can't really even begin to describe how I feel about Louise. To me she is, even today, MODERN. She looks like she could be from the year 5000. She's like... Miss Future. Lively, witty, kooky, fantastic, unreal.

I've been ignoring her films in this blog for way too long.

Meet Victor McLaglen (42), who plays Spike Madden, a sailor who literally has a girl in every port. He looked like a cross between Jack LaLanne , Neal Cassady and my abusive grandfather. It's because of the latter that I had a hard time watching this.

Don't get me wrong, I think Mr McLaglen was a good actor but to have him remind me of an atrocious person in my personal life was unpleasant.

Uh oh... she's got kids.

NEXT ONE!

Disappointed with the competition, Spike moves onto the next port and gal.

(but do pay attention to the windmill. It's beautiful and reminds me of the ones I saw in Amsterdam years ago.)

I think this girl might have been played by Maria Alba, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, she was pretty foxy.

Her beau wasn't that happy about the rekindled romance

Here's Spike doing something he seems to like just as much as he loves womanizing; having a bar fight

He ends up in the slammer and realizes he's been hit by his arch enemy, the dude who's been branding all of his dames.

That guy is called... Salami.

Yes, for real.

Salami (Robert Armstrong, 38)

After some cheesy male bonding the two become best pals

And so it goes, more dames

This one was the best bit of the film in my opinion. Spike and Salami want to visit a girl that Spike's seen before but since it's been a while, that lady has now given birth to a baby.

Salami wonders if the kid is Spike's

this kid was heartbreaking!

so Spike & Salami feel bad for the kid and leave him + his mother a deal of money.

They're not all that bad after all

having done some sailing, Spike decides it's time to settle down

he stops by in France, goes to see a carnival

Loooouise...

*swoons*

She was 22ish at the time

oh, he don't mind... would you?

Spike takes sweet Miss Godiva out for a stroll and asks about her future plans

Next up Spike wants to introduce Godiva to Salami

dun dun dun...

oh geez

this spells trouble

so you see?

she's only in it for the money

but Spike's got no idea

Whenever Godiva gets a chance to snuggle up next to Salami behind Spike's back, she does so.

He's not into it, though

...o-kay

Salami storms off to a bar and meanwhile Spike comes over

he realizes something fishy is going on

so, he's off to find Salami to kick his ass

they get into a bit of a scuffle but in the end Spike seems to have some "deep feelings" towards his pal and all is good again

88. Man, Woman and Sin (1927)

The story of a fatherless boy who struggled with his mother to make enough money to get a better life. As he grew up he didn't know much about women until one charmed him in a big way.

The neighborhood where the Whitcombs lived

The only girl I ever wanted to marry, Gladys Bockwell (34) as the single mother, Mrs Whitcomb

Philip Anderson as the young Albet Whitcomb.

He reminded me of Rowland S. Howard at times.

to impress the local boys and a rich little girl who lived in the neighborhood, Albert ventured into the haunted house on his own

he went to the top floor and looked at the girl from up there

ah, but the girl's mother didn't want him around

back at home, Albert told his mother about his adventure

Finally the Whitcombs had saved up enough money to move to a better neighborhood. Here they are leaving the old house, Mrs Whitcomb giving away their old furniture

and here's Albert, all grown up, played by John Gilbert (28) .

I think he didn't fit the part at all.

But since he co-directed the film, I suppose he could do whatever he wanted

Albert got work at a newspaper office and one day while browsing one of the papers he spotted an ad

I couldn't see the name of the place very clearly but I assume it was an ad for either a revue or a nightclub sort of a place

After work he got all dolled up and went over to the palace of sin

Women and booze were freely available but he found it all a bit too much. So he ended up saving a colleague from a beating and took the guy to a diner.

He told the guy he wanted to be more involved in the making of the paper and the guy let it be known that he'd put a word in for Albert at the office.

Next day he gets a promotion

Here's the vampy Vera Worth (Jeanne Eagels, 37) who did the social column for the paper and with her, Bancroft (Marc McDermott, 46) who owns the whole magazine.

So yeah, they are having an affair.

It was fun to watch Jeanne be a bad girl, smoking to her hearts' desire

she needed someone to accompany her to an upcoming dance

so she chose the new boy, Albert

Here they are on their way to the ball

Albert's eyebrows bothered me quite intensely and I suddenly realized why:

They reminded me of the mighty brows of The Hood from Thunderbirds

the dance went alright and Albert fell in love with the girl and wrote about her in his little column

he asks her out for a date to the Zoo and then she asks him over for some tea

Albert realizes the girl likes expensive things so he empties all his and his mother's savings so that he can buy the vamp a bracelet

the feeling isn't mutual and the girl seems to realize Albert really really likes her.

To her it's been a laugh up until then.

bad old Bancroft comes over again and gets all amorous

back at home Albert's mother has noticed the money has gone missing

Albert threatens to beat up his mother. What a schmuck.

then he runs over to his "love"

but all of a sudden Bancroft comes in, since he owns the place

a scuffle ensues but I honestly don't really know who started it or what exactly happens.

But one thing's for certain, Bancroft dies.

Albert freaks out and flees the scene

Albert's mother doesn't tell the cops anything but suddenly realizes where the boy might be

he's at the haunted house once again

At court the vamp does her best to convince the jury Albert is to blame

You'll have to see for yourselves what happens in the end.

It's a shame Gladys had such a small part once again.

I loved seeing her in bed, though.

87. Exit Smiling (1926)

Hello there!

A friend of mine passed away unexpectedly some time ago and that whole thing derailed me in a big way.

While this blog has been hibernating, I've received a fair amount of feedback and comments from visitors/readers. Thank you to each and every one of you, it means a lot.

I think I'm doing better now.

And to prove it, here's a mediocre story featuring a handful of beautiful and good actors:

Another town, another performance of Flaming Women

The crowd is growing restless, they don't like to wait

The manager takes a peek from behind the curtains, he's anxious

the leading lady hasn't shown up and one of her co stars, the campy Cecil Lovelace (Franklin Pangborn, 32) can't take the pressure. He's quite possibly the outright gayest silent film character since the eunuch attendant from Judith of Bethulia.

But no worries, Violet (Beatrice Lillie, 32) is there to save the day

the manager allows her to give it a try but right before she goes onstage, the true star arrives and crushes her dreams

so the play finally begins

Violet plays the minor part of a maid

after the show is over Violet and her troupe members gather up their belongings...

and after a quick supper at the local diner, they board a train that will take them to the next city

one troubled but illegally charming fellow by the name of Jimmy Marsh

(Jack Pickford, 30) steps on the same train

he's deep in thought but soon notices he's being subjected to a private performance

Violet is practicing in secret and it takes her a while to register she's not alone

Violet is so smitten with her encounter with Jimmy...

that she goes over to the wrong bed by accident

Mr Lovelace is outraged by such horrible behavior

The train stops in another city in the morning

Jimmy sees Violet again

turns out Jimmy is in some sort of trouble and could use some money,

so Violet suggests he could try out for the play

The manager is amused by the suggestion but allows him to audition.

Violet serves as his acting coach.

with the help of Violet's onion, anyone can cry on demand

the rest of the cast are impressed and moved to tears by the audition

that's Louise Lorraine (22) as Phyllis Tichnor, the banker's daughter, the girl Jimmy left behind

Harry Myers (44) as the evil accountant who stole money from the bank to pay for his gambling addiction and then somehow made it seem like it was all Jimmy's fault

look at Jimmy... he's talking/flirting with the diva of the show

aww, poor Violet

this is D'Arcy Corrigan (56) in a bit part

I kind of developed a crush on him because he reminds me of Nigel de Brulier

after dinner Jimmy sits outside the carriage with Violet,

but his thoughts drift back to the chick back home

he squeezes Violet's little hand and she mistakes this for a sign of affection

one morning Jimmy wakes up and realizes the train has stopped in his home town again

he tells Violet he can't be seen by the townspeople because they think he's a thief

she comes up with a plan;

Jimmy feigns sudden illness, she covers up for him during the show

The play was painful to watch because it's more like a farce.

Afterwards Violet dashes outside the theater to set the record straight on Jimmy's behalf.

She dresses up as the vamp from the show and goes over to the evil dude's house to stop him from making things difficult

she stages a scene to make it look like the guy hit her with his car. he takes her inside his house where she does her best to "seduce" him

more chaos ensues but since I'm only after Jack here, we'll skip all the other stuff

things turn out OK for Jimmy and here he is talking with his sweetheart, unaware of all the work that Violet did in order to clear his name

she sits inside the carriage mending his clothes

Jimmy decides to stop touring and to start working for the bank again.

How lame.

He bids farewell to Violet, who like a typical shy martyr creature

doesn't tell him about the sacrifice
