39. The Dragon Painter (1919)

My first Sessue Hayakawa film ! Based on the photos of the man, I was expecting someone graceful and calm, but in the film he played a wild young man who was mentally unbalanced, talked to the spirits and liked to sleep outdoors. His movements were restless and crude.
The modern day Japanese actor Ryuhei Matsuda echoes his looks in a distantly familiar way.

Hayakawa (30) as Tatsu, the Dragon Painter

Edward Peil Sr. (36) as Kano Indara, a master artist

Tsuru Aoki (27) as Ume-Ko, Kano Indra's daughter

I loved the silhouettes in these night shots
